PDT (PDTools) Cast Iron Strop: The Ultimate Finishing Touch for Razor Sharpness

The PDT (PDTools) Cast Iron Strop is a unique and highly effective tool for achieving a polished, razor-sharp edge on your knives and tools. Unlike traditional leather strops, the cast iron surface provides a perfectly flat and stable platform for honing, ensuring consistent and precise results.

Recommended grain size chart for charging cast iron strops:

  • Soft – for abrasive particles from 28/20 to 14/10 µm

  • Medium – for grain sizes from 7/5 to 3/2 µm

  • Hard – ideal for ultra-fine abrasives from 3/2 down to 0.5/0 µm

How it works:

The cast iron strop utilizes the principle of abrasive lapping. When used with a polishing compound, the microscopic abrasive particles embed themselves in the surface of the cast iron, creating a honing surface similar to that of a diamond or CBN stone.

This makes the cast iron strop incredibly versatile, allowing you to:

  • Work with loose abrasives: Apply pastes, emulsions, or suspensions directly to the strop.
  • Charge the strop: Create a dedicated honing surface by working a fixed abrasive into the cast iron.
  • Combine methods: Apply a paste to a charged strop for enhanced performance, especially with coarser grits.
